LIGHTNING SERIES

Rhino Lightning gun safes are made in the USA with global components

Lightning is the capacity series. A 10-gauge steel body, the patented SafeX® Security System, 120 minutes of fire protection, holding up to 78 long guns. All four sizes are swing out gun rack compatible.

Four sizes · 42 to 78 long guns · three finishes · 120 minutes at 1400°F · UL listed lock, UL certified RSC · Find a dealer for availability and special offers.

Lightning is the series most people actually end up buying. It carries the same patented locking system as the top of our line, adds 120 minutes of fire protection, and goes bigger than anything else we build. The 78 gun model is the largest safe in the Rhino catalog.

Four sizes, three finishes, twelve safes in total. Every one of them takes a swing out gun rack, which is the difference between a safe that holds your collection and one you can actually get a rifle out of.

Ten Gauge Steel And The SafeX® System

Lightning bodies are formed from 10 gauge steel, a full step up from the 12 and 14 gauge common at this price. What matters more is what happens at the seam. Conventional safes throw bolts behind the door frame, and a bar worked into the gap can lever the body away until those bolts have nothing to hold.

Our patented SafeX® Security System interlocks the door and body instead, so prying force works against the structure rather than the bolts. Behind the dial sits a gear-driven patented F-4 clutch, a ball bearing drill plate, and a spring loaded relocker that fires if the lock is attacked. The handle is our patented anti-tamper clutched design. Every Lightning carries a UL listed lock and is UL certified RSC and California DOJ compliant.

120 Minutes Of Fire Protection

Lightning is rated for 120 minutes at 1400°F. Fireboard runs through the ceiling, the walls, the floor and the door, and a dual heat activated intumescent seal around the door expands up to eight times its size as the temperature climbs, closing the gap against heat and smoke.

We will not call it fireproof, because no safe is. Fire resistant is the honest term, and a fire rating is a window of time measured under test conditions. The real number in your house depends on where the safe sits, how the room is framed and how long the fire burns. If you want the widest window we make, that is the Thunderbolt series at 160 minutes.

Four Sizes, Up To 78 Long Guns

Count the long guns you own, then add the next five years. The 60 and 78 gun models are a large gun safe by any measure, and the step up in size costs far less than buying a second safe later. Note that capacity assumes the interior is set up for long guns. Add optics and the practical number comes down, which is exactly where a swing out rack earns its keep.

The Four Sizes At A Glance
42 long guns. 60"H x 33"W x 27"D, about 833 lbs.
45 long guns. 66"H x 36"W x 27"D.
60 long guns. 72"H x 41"W x 27"D.
78 long guns. 72"H x 53"W x 27"D, about 1,421 lbs.

Each size comes three ways. The standard finish and the gloss finish both use a five spoke vault style handle with decorative finials and can be ordered in custom colors. The Ironworks finish is antiqued, with a cast hand wheel handle, for a heavier industrial look. Same steel, same fire rating, same lock package on all three.

What Comes Standard

Everything below is included. The fully adjustable, fully upholstered Rhino Vector™ interior with rifle rods, a deluxe door organizer with handgun holders and pockets, factory installed LED wand lighting with an infrared motion sensor, an internal electrical and USB outlet, and floor anchoring hardware. External hinges let the door open a full 180 degrees, which matters more than people expect when the safe sits in a corner. Every Lightning is also cut to accept a swing out gun rack, sold separately.

Limited lifetime warranty. It covers defects in workmanship and materials, and, unlike most warranties in this category, damage from an attempted or actual break-in, or from a fire. If someone attacks your safe, we repair or replace it. Compare the rest of the line on the gun safes page, or find a dealer to see one in person.
